Translated roughly as "shoulder spirits", the jatashi are small, invisible creatures whose existence is difficult to ascertain. A jatash will attach itself to a single human companion and ride on his or her shoulder. While jatashi are weightless and invisible and silent, they're said to communicate with soft puffs of air, hints of warmth, and almost imperceptible tugs to the hair or ear. Because they are so difficult to detect, jatashi are often assumed to simply be imaginary friends--even by their human companions. Their true status--whether actual spirits or simply creatures of the imagination--remained undetermined.
